FAQs
YOUR FIRST VISIT FAQs
I've never done Pilates. Can I join? Of course! Any of our beginner classes and matwork classes are perfect for you! Which class should I start with? Any of our beginner reformer or matwork classes are a perfect starting point, to learn the fundamental pilates exercises. What's the difference between Reformer and Matwork? Reformer Pilates uses a specialised piece of equipment with springs, straps and a moving carriage to add resistance and support. It can help build strength, improve stability and challenge your body in different ways. The springs can also make certain movements more accessible for beginners. Matwork Pilates uses your body weight, a mat and small props such as balls, bands and weights. It focuses on core strength, control, mobility and body awareness, with an emphasis on moving well and connecting with your breath. Both are effective — they just offer a different way to move. At The Mat Life, our classes are designed to meet you where you’re at, whether you’re brand new to Pilates or have been moving for years. What if I'm not very fit or flexible? That's why you are here! We all start somewhere! We will meet you where you are at in your fitness journey. YOUR FIRST VISIT What should I wear? Can I do Pilates while pregnant? Yes, unless you have been advised otherwise. Pilates is a great way to continue moving whilst pregnant! We do highly recommend also attending a women's health physio appointment whilst pregnant they would be able to tailor your fitness program for you whilst pregnant as everyone is different. What about postpartum? Yes, unless you have been advised otherwise. We do ask you to wait for clearance at your 6 week check up. We strongly recommend attending an appointment with a Women's Health Physio for a thorough postnatal check. Can I exercise with an injury? This will be dependent on the extent of an injury whilst, in acute stages of an injury we would always recommend seeking medical or physio advise prior to returning to exercise. If you are in pain due to an injury we would recommend not coming to class until the pain has subsided. If you are recovery from an injury and gave been cleared to exercise, we are happy to modify our classes for you, we also have lots of experience working with physios to assist ion your return to exercise. Can exercises be modified for me? As per above, yes depending on the extent of your injury. We will assess this on a case by case basis. Some injuries may require a private session prior to commencing or returning to group classes so we can assess your movement and teach modifications necessary.
